Grenada Government Pays Tribute To Maurice Bishop’s Mother

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada CMC – The Grenada government will later this week disclose how it plans to honour the memory of Mrs. Alimenta Bishop, the mother of former prime minister, Maurice Bishop.

Mrs. Bishop, 97, died last Saturday without ever getting to know where the remains of her son were being held.

Bishop was killed on October 19, 1983, four years after he came to power in the first ever coup in the English-speaking Caribbean.

His death resulted in a United States-led invasion of the island and the body of the former prime minister has never been recovered despite pleas from his family and successive governments.

In a brief statement, the Keith Mitchell administration expressed “deepest regret” at her death adding that “Mrs. Bishop has lived a long life, and has always carried herself with grace even through times of personal tragedy, as she has had to endure the loss of both her husband and son on the national stage.

“Our Government stands with the family during this time of grief. The cabinet of Grenada will meet this week to discuss ways in which we can honour her memory.”

Mrs. Bishop was also the aunt of Governor General, Dame Cecile La Grenade.

On Monday, the St. Lucia government described Mrs. Bishop as a “strong admirable Caribbean mother”.

“Despite the pain and anguish she suffered over the years, she continued to be a model citizen and constantly rallied for justice and fairness.

“It is regrettable, that after so many years of agitation she was unable to receive disclosure about the burial site of her son, Maurice Bishop, who was brutally killed in 1983.  She was a strong, admirable Caribbean mother,” Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony said.

No date has yet been set for Mrs. Bishop’s funeral.
