Haunted Celebrity Homes: Anne Rice

Known as Rosegate, this New Orleans residence was steeped in spooky history well before author Anne Rice purchased it in 1989. The home was originally built in 1857 for wealthy merchant Albert Hamilton Brevard, who shot himself on the front porch after running into financial trouble. Now, on cloudless nights, it’s said that a misty form can be seen on the porch where Albert committed suicide. The Greek Revival-style mansion was the inspiration for Mayfair Manor, the setting of Rice’s 1990 novel, The Witching Hour. Many of the home’s features play a significant role in the novel, including the swimming pool and the side porch with ornate cast-iron decorations.
