Grenada Deported 135 People Mainly From Caribbean Last Year

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada CMC – Grenada says it has deported 135 people last year, mainly from Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, for violating immigration regulations or did not meet the requirements for entering the spice Isle.

Head of the Immigration Department, Superintendent Jessmon Prince, said most of those deported from Grenada were mainly Caribbean nationals.

He said they were deported for various offences ranging from drug related offences to immigration violations.

“When a person is deported from another country, they cannot return without special permission and at times it will be in the person’s best interest to ask them to leave voluntarily so that they can return without having to seek special permission from the Minister for National Security,” he said.

According to the official figures released here, 108 Grenadians were deported mainly from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Caribbean.

Prince said 65 of the deportees were classified as “criminal deportees” while 43 were refused entry on other grounds.

“Permission to enter another country is at the discretion of the immigration official and so we had a number of Grenadians who were refused entry to other countries not just internationally but regionally,” he said.
