Son Of St. Kitts Opposition Legislator Shot And Injured

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts CMC – The opposition party here on Monday called on law enforcement authorities to bring to “swift justice” anyone involved in criminal activities in St. Kitts and Nevis, as police continued their search for the gunmen who shot the son of an opposition politician on Saturday night.

Mikhail Liburd, the son of Peoples Action Movement (PAM) politician Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, was shot just as he was about to enter his home.

His father said that while he was not going to speculate on the shootings, he would arrange to have his own personal security.

Police said they were questioning five people in connection with the incident and that a semi-automatic pistol and rounds of ammunition had been recovered.

Last week, the twin-island federation recorded its first murder for the year, when Valentine Gaskin Jr. was shot and killed. Police have since appealed to the public to help with their investigations.

In a statement, Dr. Timothy Harris, the leader of the opposition grouping, Team Unity, said that the young Liburd was shot at the “residence he occupies with his father”.

“Gun violence or any type of violence is unacceptable and must be stopped using all the resources at the disposal of law enforcement agencies in this country,” he said, urging “law enforcement agencies to be diligent and professional in their sustained efforts to stamp out crime and violence once and for all.

“Any criminal act in this Federation is one too many and I urge our residents and citizens to be vigilant and to fully cooperate with the police in their investigations. We must bring perpetrators of crime to swift justice.”

Harris, who had served as a senior minister in the Denzil Douglas administration, said there were “too many individuals in our midst who participate in anti-social behavior because they feel left out and marginalized.

“It is incumbent upon those of us who can make a difference in their lives to do everything we can to address those troubling issues that only undermine national development and retard the people’s prosperity agenda,” he said, appealing to the public to provide the police with information in dealing with the criminal activities that have taken place over the past week.
