US Authorities Seize Significant Funds From Women Heading To Jamaica

PHILADELPHIA, USA CMC – The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency says it seized nearly US$100,000 from two unidentified women heading to Jamaica on consecutive days earlier this month.

CBP said the women had violated federal currency reporting regulations and that the first woman had been stopped as she attempted to board a flight to Montego Bay on January 4.

It said that the unidentified woman had originally indicated that she was caring US$4,900, but that search of her carry-on bag and checked luggage reveled a total US$65,643.

CBP said that on the following day, another unidentified woman attempting to board a flight to Montego Bay also reported having in her possession six thousand dollars, but a search later indicated that she was carrying US$31,040.

CBP said while none of the women had been charged; the cash had been seized.

“These are two very expensive lessons that these women learned, and we hope that this experience entices other travellers to truthfully report to Customs and Border Protection officers the total amount of currency that they bring to the US, or intend to take from the US,” said Tarance Drafts, acting CBP port director for the Area Port of Philadelphia.

“CBP derives no great pleasure from seizing travelers’ currency. However, there are severe consequences for failing to comply with our nation’s laws,” he added.

CBP said the Port of Philadelphia had seized US$1.3 million in unreported currency last year.
