Nazim Burke Elected Leader Of The NDP

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada CMC – Former finance minister, Nazim Burke, was elected leader of the main opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) almost a year after the party was swept out of office losing all 15 seats to the New National party of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

Burke, who replaced former prime minister Tillman Thomas, who did not seek re-election, has called on party supporters who left to “come back home” saying they had an important contribution in rebuilding the party.

The convention on Sunday was overshadowed by the resignation of one of the party’s strategist, William Joseph, who had been openly critical of Burke’s leadership.

But the new party leader, who received the backing of the majority of the 400 delegates, told supporters that the NDP of 2008 was now different with new players engaged in rebuilding and strengthening the organization that has been in office on two occasions.

“I must apology to those who have had distressful moments,” he said as he issued a call for former supporters and close associates to have discussions with a view to resolving issues.

“I am willing to meet and discuss whatever were your complaints. There are always differences in family but we can come together and work things out,” he said.
