Boating Is More Affordable Than You May Think

NC – There is a boat for every age, lifestyle and budget. If you don’t believe it, take a look at the Affordability Planner on the website, DiscoverBoating.ca.

You might be surprised to see how boating compares to other leisure activities such as golfing and family theme park vacations. Indeed, Discover Boating gives several cost-saving pointers for new and aspiring boat owners, such as:

Visit a boat show. This is the place to get access to dealerships and retailers all in one place so you can find the right boat and negotiate the right price. Boat shows are held across Canada every year, and you can find those in your area on the Discover Boating website in the Boat Show Finder section.

Save on fuel. Most boats on the water today are under eight metres (26′ feet) in length and a tank of gas can go a long way, depending on your on-water activities. Boating isn’t like driving a car where you are using gas at all times. In fact, boaters may be fishing or swimming and not using the motor for the majority of their day on the water. If on a sailboat, the motor is used even less.

Think storage. You have several storage options available depending on the season and size of your boat. Smaller boats can be stored in a garage, on a trailer in your driveway or backyard (be sure to check your local bylaws). For larger boats, or for small boat owners that are looking for more convenience, storage at a marina and in-water boat slips are a good option. During the winter months, it is best for boats to be out of the water and under cover, either shrink-wrapped, in a climate controlled area or under a tarp or a sturdy cover.
