Former St. Lucia Governor General Dies

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Former Governor General Boswell Williams passed away at his Sans Souci residence here on Sunday. He was 88.

Williams represented the Southern town of Vieux Fort in the legislature from 1974 to 1979 and was appointed Governor General on June 19, 1980.

He replaced Sir Allen Montgomery Lewis, father of the former Prime Minister Vaughan Lewis.

As Governor General, he played a major part in helping to resolve a serious constitutional crisis in the St. Lucia Labour Party brought on by a fight for leadership of the government between the then Prime Minister Allan Louisy and his Deputy George Odlum.

After just over two years in the position, he resigned on December 13, 1982.

Williams is survived by his widow and three children.
