Kingston Residents stage fiery protest after young man shot and killed by police in Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica CMC — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it will launch an investigation into the death of 27-year-old , Frei Riley as residents of the Mountain View Avenue staged a fiery protest here on Saturday accusing the police of murdering him.

The police, who have been tight lipped on the incident, were forced to use armoured vehicles to clear the road hat is the main thoroughfare between the Corporate Area and the Norman Manley International Airport.

Fire officials were also kept busy extinguishing flames as the residents set fire to debris in protest at the killing that occurred late Friday as Riley was returning from a party.

Residents said the the 27-year-old man was accosted by the police and shot in the head. He died on the spot.

INDECOM’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Khamile Reid said investigators and forensic experts visited the area on Saturday and have since interviewed police officers serving them with notices to provide statements regarding Riley’s death.
