T&T Television Icon Dies Following Battle With Cancer

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Hazel Ward Redman , a radio and television icon, affectionately called “Aunty Hazel”, has died after a battle with prolonged battle pancreatic cancer. She was 79.

A former English teacher, she began her career with Radio Trinidad and in 1962 she became one of the news anchors on the country’s first television station, Trinidad and Tobago television (TTT).

She was also the first weather anchor.

She is best known as Aunty Hazel to the thousands of children to whom she gave exposure on her shows “Twelve and Under” which aired for almost four decades and “Teen Talent”.

Mrs. Ward Redman received several national awards including the Trinidad and Tobago Broadcasters Award in 2007. She was also awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) in 2000.

One television station here had listed her as among the 50 most influential people of Trinidad and Tobago.

“They just don’t make them like Hazel anymore, and she comes from a breed of broadcasters that epitomizes excellence,” said veteran media personality Jones P. Madeira.

Funeral details have not yet been released.
