Canadian Nationals On Drug Charges In St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – A court here has sentenced a Canadian man to a one year jail term after he pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a controlled drug and possession with intention to export.

The court, in the southern town of Vieux Fort, heard that Anthony Clive Whittey and his two sons were arrested on November 9 at the Hewanorra International Airport, as they were about to board a flight to Canada. Whittey received two one-year jail terms to run concurrently.

One of his sons, 23-year-old Jamal Whittey, was fined EC$25,000 (One EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) on a charge of possession and another EC$10,000 on a charge of possession with intent to export, while Chevon Whittey was ordered to pay EC$15,000 and EC$5,000 respectively on the same two charges.

If they fail to pay the fines within six months, they will each serve 18 months in prison.
