Canadian Diabetes Association Presents Sixth Annual Black Diabetes Expo

TORONTO, Ontario – The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and its Caribbean Diabetes Chapter will be presenting the sixth annual Black Diabetes Expo on Saturday, April 25.

Attendees will learn about the link between blood pressure and diabetes and how they can prevent and manage diabetes while improving their overall health.

The Expo, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, will be held at the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) at 995 Arrow Road in Toronto.

The event also offers a trade show, featuring diabetes-related information, products and services, free kidney disease and CANRISK screenings, and opportunities to speak one-on-one with local dietitians, pharmacists and foot care specialists.

On-stage programming runs throughout the day and key speakers and presentations will include:

  • Taking control of your blood pressure will control your diabetes management” (Dr. George Dresser, MD, PhD, FRCPC, clinical pharmacologist, Western University).
  • Medications used for controlling high blood pressure” (Ann Petgrave, BSC, DPharm, MBA, RTh, CDE, William Osler Health System).
  • The new Diabetes Charter for Canada” (Aileen Leo, executive director, government relations and public affairs, Canadian Diabetes Association).
  • Exercise: A natural medication to prevent and manage type 2 diabetes: (Dr. Michael Sarin, MD, FRCPC, MEd, CDE, UHN, Toronto Rehab).

There will be a healthcare expert panel discussion featuring Paulette Lewis, nurse practitioner, Renal Program, The Scarborough Hospital; Dr. Paul Galiwango, cardiologist; Kathy Nelson, registered nurse, certified diabetes educator; and Ann Petgrave, clinical pharmacist, certified diabetes educator.

Partners of the Expo include the Caribbean Camera, G98.7 FM, Jamaican Canadian Association, Rogers TV, TAIBU Community Health Centre and Viv’s Catering.

The CDA is the registered national charity that helps the 10 million Canadians with diabetes or pre-diabetes live healthy lives, while also educating those at risk. In communities across Canada, the CDA: offers a wide array of support services to members of the public; offers resources to health-care professionals on best practices to care for people with diabetes; advocates to governments, schools, workplaces and others on behalf of people with diabetes; and, funds research on better treatments and to find a cure.
