Guyana’s Opposition Coalition Party Brings Its Election Message To Toronto

TORONTO, Ontario – Two veteran political leaders of Guyana’s main opposition coalition party, APNU-AFC, Brigadier David Arthur Granger and Moses Veerasammy Nagamootoo, will bring their election message — “It is time for change; it’s time for unity” to Toronto.

They will address the Guyanese Diaspora in Canada about their vision for the future of the country at a fundraising brunch, at the Elite Banquet Hall in Toronto, on Sunday, April 19.

Earlier this year, on February 14, opposition forces, the APNU and AFC, formed a coalition, with the signing of the “Cummingsburg Accord”, to contest the upcoming May 11 general elections, with Granger and Nagamootoo as its presidential and prime ministerial candidates respectively.

Granger, who was born in the nation’s capital of Georgetown on July 15, 1945, is a former Commander of the Guyana Defense Force and former National Security Adviser to the President.

He was defeated by current President Donald Ramotar in the November 2011 general election and has been leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Guyana since January 2012.

Granger is married to Sandra (née Chan-A-Sue) and is the father of two daughters.

Nagamootoo, who was born on November 30, in the village of Whim, in the eastern county of Berbice, in Guyana, was elected to Parliament in 1992 as a People’s Progressive Party (PPP) MP, and served as Minister of Information and Minister of Local Government.

He remained in Cabinet under the presidencies of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Samuel Hinds, Janet Jagan and Dr. Bharat Jagdeo, resigning as Minister in 2000, but remained an MP until 2011 when he resigned from the PPP, having first joined in 1964.

Nagamootoo then joined the Alliance For Change (AFC) in October 2011, and was re-elected to Parliament the next month.

The event, which will include cultural programming and is being held at 1850 Albion Road, will run from 1:30PM to 6PM, and admission is $50.00.
