This Year Association Of Black Law Enforcers Honours Eight Students

AJAX, Durham – This Saturday, May 9, the Association of Black Law Enforcers (A.B.L.E.) will honour eight students from the GTA with scholarship awards at the 23rd annual A.B.L.E. Scholarship Awards Ball.

These students are being recognized for academic excellence and a commitment to serving their community.

The A.B.L.E. Scholarship Program was created in order to recognize the contribution of the first Canadian Black law enforcers, Rose Fortune (1774-1864) and Peter C. Butler III (1859-1943).

By awarding these scholarships, A.B.L.E.’s goal is to assist Black and other racialized youth to achieve their educational goals while making a positive contribution to society.

The theme for this year’s Gala is “Bridging the Gap, Fostering Community Relationships” accordingly, the event’s keynote address will be delivered by Deputy Commissioner Kimberly L. Beaty of the Buffalo (New York U.S.A.) Police Department.

Deputy Commissioner Beaty is the first African American female Deputy Commissioner of the Buffalo Police Department and she has a keen interest in promoting problem-solving strategies in community policing.

Captain Ronald S. Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be recognized with a President’s award for his contribution to “bridging the gap and fostering community relationships” amid the tensions in Ferguson, Missouri, earlier this year.

Established in 1992, A.B.L.E. is a non-profit organization formed to address the needs and concerns of Black and other racial minorities in law enforcement and the community.

Its membership includes police officers, correctional officers, probation and parole officers, immigration officers, customs officers, court services officers, by-law enforcement officers, sheriff’s officers, special constables and members from the community.

The 2015 Awards Ball, co-sponsored by the Durham Regional Police Service, will be held at the Ajax Convention Centre, located at 550 Beck Crescent, Ajax, Ontario and will commence at 6pm.

Federal, provincial, and municipal police and criminal justice agency representatives are expected to be in attendance.
