The Ontario Government And Its Carding Plans

By Justice Romain Pitt

Is the government of Ontario contemplating an amendment or amendments to the Police Act to confer more power on the police?

Why all of a sudden some important people are trying to regularize an illegal, dangerous and racist policy? It could hardly be a consequence of an increase in violent crime, when all the statistics point in the opposite direction.

No one has attempted to explain why after so many years of hard work by so many people to not only improve race relations, but to protect civil liberties of all Ontarians, we are all of a sudden thinking about taking these horrendous, backward steps.

In a constitutional democracy we need less, not more, arbitrary police power.
