St. Kitts To Establish High Commission In Canada

BASETTERE, St. Kitts, CMC – In a bid to strengthen the relationship with Canada the government has announced plans to establish a High Commission in Ottawa.

Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris who made the announcement on radio late Wednesday said his administration is committed to making Canada a foreign affairs priority.

“I am pleased to report, that within a matter of weeks we should have installed a

High Commission in Ottawa, Canada. For the first time St. Kitts and Nevis on its own will be opening an Embassy intended to interact steadfastly with the government of Canada to ensure overtime we can give them the comfort level , that the circumstances of the past administration, that led to their revoking our  visa free access to Canada that those circumstances no longer hold…..”

.Last year Canada revoked its visa waiver for nationals of St Kitts and Nevis, citing security concerns related to the citizenship by investment programme.

The government is also working to shore up its relationship with the United States.

“We have started a higher and better level of cooperation with the US Government, so they are here regularly, in consultation with us….our international relations are being reset so that people can have confidence in the new government.

The Prime Minister said the country’s Citizenship by Investment programme came in for scrutiny from the United States Treasury Department, whose Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN) expressed concern last year, that it had lax controls which made it attractive to illicit actors.
