Guyana Government To Help Indigenous Women Start Up Businesses

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Feb 26, (CMC) – The Guyana government says, it will provide four million dollars (One Guyana dollar =US$0.004) to support viable business ventures for indigenous women.

It said, the funds would be channelled through the Indigenous Women’s Small Business Initiative under the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, and in addition, 20 women in Monkey Mountain will be supported with small grants, from the Small Business Bureau for starting kitchen gardens.

“These projects will be executed in support of green and sustainable initiatives, and will support the schools’ hot meal program by providing fresh vegetables and fruits and other food items on a daily basis,” a government statement said.

It added, that during the recent budget debate, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe, explained, that besides earning an income for their families, these women will also profit from cookery and nutrition classes.

She further noted, that missions will be sent out throughout some regions here to assess the resources available that can be turned into business ventures headed by the women.

Lowe said, a Situation Analysis for indigenous women and children will be carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the first time and that the results will provide valuable information, which will influence the design of better programs for the empowerment of women and girls.
