Jamaica Chamber Of Commerce Calls For New Administration To Address Issues Affecting Fragile Economy

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Mar. 3, (CMC) – The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) says, the issues impacting a fragile Jamaican economy must be addressed by the new administration, despite a razor thin majority in Parliament.

JCC President, Warren McDonald, in a release today, said, it is also crucial for the Andrew Holness-led administration to ensure that public-private partnerships are maintained.

“The chamber feels it’s very important that there be close collaboration between government, opposition, private sector, unions and civil society. The close election results necessitates this. There is dire need for collaboration and I think that one of the ways to achieve this is through the close working relationship …”he said.

Concerning the low voter turnout in the February 25 general election, McDonald said, this should serve as a wake-up call for the government, opposition and civil society.

“I think the 47.7 percent voter turnout is the lowest in our history. I think one of the problems is that there is no engagement with the people. And this close relationship will force this engagement,” he said.

Last week Thursday, Holness,43, led the JLP to a 32-31 seat victory over the incumbent People’s National Party (PNP) that was seeking a second consecutive term in power under the 70-year-old Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.
