Jamaican Police Officer Charged With Murder After First Being Hailed A Hero

KINGSTON, Jamaica, March 21, 2018 (CMC) – A police officer, who was hailed a hero last year, after she reportedly shot and killed a gunman, will re-appear in court on April 27, after she was charged with his murder.

Melissa White, who is attached to the Police Commissioner’s Office, was offered J$500,000 bail when she appeared in the St. Andrew Parish Court, yesterday, hours after being charged with the murder of Edward George Brown.

Brown was fatally shot on June 6, with the police reporting then, that he was one of two armed men who tried to steal White’s vehicle, when she stopped at a traffic light. The gunmen, reportedly, blocked the vehicle and ordered her out.

She responded and challenged the gunmen and, during the incident, one of the gunmen was shot and injured.

The female cop reported at the time, that to preserve her life, she left the scene without retrieving the weapon. The injured man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

White was praised for her action, but an investigation, carried out by the Inspectorate of the Constabulary and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), indicated that Brown was murdered by the police officer.

Reports indicate that Brown had stolen a bottle of olive oil from a super market and was running when he was shot by the policewoman.
