Black Action Defense Committee Commends Toronto Police Officer Who Arrested Suspect In Yonge Street Van Tragedy

Following is a statement, from the Black Action Defense Committee, that was issued to the media on Tuesday, April 24, a day after the deadly van attack on pedestrians in Toronto, that resulted in the death of 10 and injury of 14.

The Black Action Defense Committee wishes to publicly commend the police officer, police officer Ken Lam, who singlehandedly apprehended the suspect. in the vehicular tragedy that struck on Yonge Street, in Toronto, between Finch Avenue and Sheppard Avenue, yesterday, without incident.

It was a classic case of outstanding police work, which we expect from all our police officers.

The fact that such carnage took place and the suspect was apprehended without a single shot fired, or without any violence, of any type, towards the accused, is admirable and an example to all police officers, about good policing practices.

As a longstanding critic of police violence and abuse, which most Black citizens experience at the hands of police, BADC commends this officer’s actions as an example of the type of policing that BADC and the wider community expect for all citizens, regardless of their color.

BADC commends officer Lam on his outstanding professionalism, in the manner in which he apprehended the suspect in the wake of this very tragic incident.

Officer, you are a credit to your organization. Keep up the good work and never deviate from that standard.
