ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda, November 23, 2018 (CMC) – West Indies’ hopes of repeating as ICC Women’s Twenty20 champions ended in tears here, last night, when they went down by 71-runs to Australia in the first semi-final at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a competitive 142 for a place in Saturday’s final, the Windies were bundled out for 71 in the 18th over – their joint second lowest total in T20 Internationals.
Only captain, Stafanie Taylor, with 16, made it into double figures, as the hosts lost wickets steadily and never recovered.
Australian Opener, Alyssa Healy, had earlier top-scored with 46 from 38 deliveries; captain, Meg Lanning, made 31; and Rachael Haynes hit a fast 25, as the Aussies rallied to 142 for five on a slow track.
Australia will now face England in the final, after the English team comfortably beat India in the second semi-final.
The first semi-final was a repeat of the 2016 final, in which Windies beat Australia by eight wickets to win the competition for the first time.
