Jamaica’s Firearms Licensing Authority Warns Against “Gun Salutes”

KINGSTON, Jamaica, December 31, 2019 (CMC) – The Firearms Licensing Authority (FLA) has warned licensed firearm holders, that they face immediate revocation of their licenses, if they are caught participating in “gun salutes”, ushering the New Year.

“We are also appealing to all licence holders that a firearm is a deadly weapon and should only be used in the protection of life and property. Further, a licensed firearm holder should never discharge their weapon unless under imminent threat or intent to protect one’s life and property,” the FLA said in a statement.

The FLA warned that participation in “gun salutes” is an offence, under the Firearms Act, and no firearm licence holder should participate in gun salutes on any occasion, including New Year’s Eve parties, funerals or otherwise.

“The FLA views licensed firearm holders as law-abiding and responsible citizens, therefore we implore them to act accordingly, in the safe use and handling of their firearm at all times,” the FLA said, urging  members of the public to provide the FLA with any information, regarding concerns or breaches observed, in relation to licensed firearm holders.
