Bloody Weekend In Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, February 11, 2020 (CMC) – At least 11 people were killed, including four during a shootout with police, as the death toll, since the start of the year, climbed to 57, over the last weekend.

Police are probing the murders of Neera Ramnath and 39-year-old Craig Hoi Pong, the son of a well-known businessman, who were both shot on Sunday, in Prices Town, south of here.

The police said the victims were part of a group liming at an estate, when a gunman walked up and fired several shots, killing Ramnath and Hoi Pong, a US citizen, instantly.

Media reports said that Rachael Sukhdeo, the widow of the murdered real estate and car dealer, Sheron Sukhdeo, was also at the estate. It is unclear whether this has been yet another attempt on her life.

Earlier, police shot and killed four men, during a shootout with five bandits, who had robbed a family at their Aranguez home, on the outskirts of the capital, during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said that they have arrested one of the bandits and two others managed to escape.

The authorities have identified two of the dead bandits as, Miguel and Keshorn Cox, from Morvant, along the east-west corridor. The two detained suspects, aged 23 and 27, are also from Morvant.

Police said they also discovered the bodies of two people — a man and a woman – in a vehicle in Arouca, east of here, and that of a woman, believed to be in her 60s, lying on the roadside in Sangre Grande, north east of here, on Sunday morning.

On Saturday, the authorities found the body of Jules Bruce lying near a river in St. James, west of here, while investigations are continuing into the death of 36-year-old construction worker, Renrick Phillip, who was shot by an off-duty police officer.

Media reports said that Phillip was brandishing a gun, while beating a woman outside a bar, and that the officer had intervened in a bid to end the matter.
