GEORGETOWN, Guyana (Friday, October 30, 2020) — Guyana’s Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mohabir Anil Nandlall; and Attorney, Timothy Munro Jonas, Chairman of A New and United Guyana (ANUG) — a recently formed political party that contested in the last general election — is to be appointed as Senior Counsel (SC), with effect from today.
In a statement, the Office of the President announced that after consultation with Yonette Cummings, acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, will make the appointments.
Nandlall and Jonas were appointed, “based on their demonstrable knowledge of, and learning in, the law; on account of their exemplary erudition and diligence in the practice of the law; and by virtue of their distinguished contributions to the growth and development of Guyana’s jurisprudence and constitutional democracy”, the statement explained.
The SC, also referred to as the honour of silk, is conferred on a distinguished lawyer, is recognised by the courts, and the recipients are privileged to sit in the Bar at the Court, where they are considered members of the “inner bar.”
Since members wear silk gowns, of a specific design, Senior Counsels are usually referred to as having attained ‘silk’.
Interestingly, on August 1, Jonas had filed legal action, seeking a judicial review of former President David Granger’s appointment of four Senior Counsels, back in December 2019.
