Common Lies Canadians Tell At The Start Of A New Relationship

If you’re guilty of bending the truth when first getting to know a new love interest, you’re probably not alone, as more than half (53%) of Canadians have also lied to their potential partner, with men being three times more likely to withhold the truth, about their marital status, compared to women

New research from LeoVegas — a survey of 2,000 Canadian adults, conducted by Censuswide, last month — has revealed the common lies told, during the dating stages, as well as the fabrications that get found out the most.

Most common lies
A staggering 1 in 10 Canadians admit to avoiding the truth, when the topic of previous partners arises, with women (15%) lying more than men (12%).

When the conversation turns to marriage, men are found to be three times more likely to lie about the ring on their finger, compared to women.

1 in 10 people have told a tale about their age, with those, aged 16-24 (14%), the most likely to do so. It doesn’t stop there, as over 10% of the public also feel the need to exaggerate, when it comes to talking about shared interests.

The lies we fall for
When addressing the receiving end, over two thirds of the population have fallen for a lie at the start of a relationship; although, a quarter of women (27%) and a third of men (35%) believe that they have never been lied to.

For 1 in 5 people, choosing to not be honest about the number of previous partners they have, resulted in being caught out, with women (23%) more likely to be deceived than men (14%).

That’s not all, 10% of Canadians shared that they’ve uncovered lies relating to their partners profession, with their job title being the centre of the lie. Surprisingly, those, in their mid-20s to mid-40s, witness this the most.

Mark Cheeswright, Country Manager at LeoVegas, explained: “Parts of this research are what you might expect to see in a new relationship, with tall tales about age and the number of previous partners, but there are certainly some really surprising results too.

“As the research shows, the common lies told at the start of a relationship are often uncovered. We would always advise that honesty is the best policy, when getting to know someone new.”
