METROLINX: Building The Future Of Transit; Building Your Future

As we emerge from the pandemic, Metrolinx is building – and rebuilding – a transit network that puts our customers first.

Ontario’s transit agency is making it easier to choose transit by adapting to new customer travel patterns, offering more service when you want it, while also building new subways, light rail transit (LRT) lines and extensions to our existing service.

The vision is frequent service where riders will not have to rely on schedules, a vibrant transit system that will connect communities and serve the Greater Golden Horseshoe residents better, faster and easier than ever before, so you can live, work and play wherever you choose.

Throughout this journey, there has been one constant: progress. And while Metrolinx is focused on meeting the region’s growing needs in 2030 and beyond, there is an incredible amount of transit progress that’s already been delivered.

  • GO Expansion is bringing more service across the entire system, including the new Bloomington Station and new hourly service between Union Station and West Harbour Station in Hamilton
  • Four subway projects across Toronto are being prioritized, with ongoing progress on the Ontario Line, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and Yonge North Subway Extension, and the recent ground-breaking of Scarborough Subway Extension
  • More rapid transit options for more communities are coming. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is already in vehicle testing, while construction is full-speed ahead on the Finch West and Hurontario LRT lines and Dundas and Durham bus rapid transit (BRT)
  • Regional transportation hubs, including Union Station Bus Terminal, the new Bay Concourse and Kipling Transit Hub are making easier and more connected journeys across the region
  • Improved customer amenities with free Wi-Fi on GO trains and busses and PRESTO contactless payment with credit card or mobile wallet on UP Express

Transit is about so much more than getting to and from work. Metrolinx is creating a system that opens up many more possibilities for changing demands and future needs. Riders want to spend more time living – visiting family, attending concerts or sports events, checking out the great local attractions like Niagara Falls or the Barrie waterfront – and less time in traffic, so Metrolinx is transforming the way the region moves.

“While we may see changes in when people travel, or how frequently, transit will always be a vital part of moving people around the region,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster. “What we are doing, in all of our plans, is creating capacity that is flexible enough to move people across the Greater Golden Horseshoe wherever they want to go, whenever they want to go.”

The future of transit across the region is being expanded in a way that will set our region up for generations. It is indeed a bright future – where we can all get on board. It’s happening.
