Jamaican Cop Among Seven Facing Extradition On Lottery Scamming Charges

KINGSTON, Jamaica Mar. 31, (CMC) – A policeman is among seven persons facing extradition to the United States to stand trial on lottery scamming charges.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the police detained 19 persons in a major anti-lottery scam operation, carried out in the western parish of St. James, the northern parishes of Trelawny and St. Ann, as well as the Corporate Area.

The police report that late Wednesday, 12 persons were released while the others were served with extradition warrants.

During the operation, cash amounting to J$1.8 million and a motorcar were seized.

Concerning the arrest of the cop, head of the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC), Devon Watkis, said he will be “subjected to similar legal processes in continuation of our investigations.”

He said the arrest of the policeman showed that the constabulary’s investigations include all those who are responsible for criminal activities.

Watkis also revealed that international law enforcement officers partnered with the more than 200 members of C-TOC, the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, the Financial Investigations Division, the Constabulary Financial Unit, the Mobile Reserve, and the Area One Police, in the raids that involved the search of 20 locations.
