KINGSTON, Jamaica, August 17, 2016 (CMC) – The Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) was placed under lockdown, on Tuesday night, following a shooting incident that left at least one person injured , the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper has reported.
The paper said that a taxi operator was the victim of the shooting and that the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) had confirmed the incident.
A text message sent to students by the UWI warned them against leaving their halls of residence and urging off-campus students to get home “as quick and as safe as you can”.
“All persons living on hall, be advised (that) due to a shooting on campus, it is now on lockdown. Do not leave (your) hall and go walking about,” according to the text message that was reproduced by the newspaper.
The police said that the unidentified taxi operator was in critical, but stable, condition at hospital and that investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
The UWI Mona campus, like the other UWI campuses in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, caters to students from all over the Caribbean.
