T&T Police Recover More Than 1,600 Rounds Of Ammunition

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, August 16, 2016 (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago police say they have discovered more than 1, 600 rounds of ammunition, hidden in an abandoned plot of land in Mon Repos, south of here.

The police said that the 1,691 rounds of ammunition was discovered following a tip-off, but that no one has been arrested in connection with the discovery.

The ammunition found in two duffle bags, on Monday night, by members of the Southern Division’s Rapid Response Unit, included 589 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 857 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, as well as 114 rounds of .380 ammunition.

The police said they also found 100 rounds of .22, one Glock and 17 optical guide lasers.

This is the second major ammunition discovery here in a week. Last week, the ;police raided a house in Piparo, south of here, and allegedly found 6,490 rounds of .22 ammunition and 50 rounds of .35 ammunition.

A 70-year-old cancer patient and retired architect, Morrison Mewalal, has since been charged with importing the ammunition and released on one million (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) bail.
