GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) says more than 600 babies were born to teenage mothers ranging from under 14 to 19 years during the first six months of this year.

The GPHC gave no figures to indicate how many babies were born to mothers under the age of 14 years, but said that the 657 babies delivered at the institution, constitute a decrease in the same period last year when 673 babies were born to teenage mothers.

It said overall, 3,125 babies were born during the period January 1 to July 31 this year, but 50 of them were still-births.

“During the same period in the previous year, the hospital had successfully delivered 3151 babies; out of its 3207 deliveries as 56 were still-births,” the GPHC added.

It said the month of January recorded the most deliveries, with a total of 565 babies.

In 2014, April had the highest amount of deliveries with a total of 501 babies being born.
