Former T&T Government Minister Dies

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Mar 16, (CMC) – Lincoln Myers, a former minister in the National Alliance of Reconstruction (NAR) government, under the late ANR Robinson, has died.

Myers, who was in his mid-60’s died at his home, last night, and had been ailing for some time, was hospitalised last week.

Myers, who served as Minister of Food Production, Marine Exploitation, Forestry and the Environment, during the 1986-91 government, will be most remembered for the 40-day fast he staged on the Hall of Justice, in 1985, over corruption allegations against the People’s National Movement (PNM) administration.

“He was an indefatigable advocate for good governance, whose 40-day fast on the steps of the Hall of Justice, in 1985, will forever be etched in the political history of Trinidad and Tobago.

“I join with my colleagues in conveying my sincere condolences to his family at this very difficult time of bereavement. I encourage them to take comfort in the knowledge that amidst the pain and sadness that they now feel, they are supported by God’s unconditional love as they strive to come to terms with their loss,” Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, said, in a statement.

The former Food Production Minister was part of the victorious NAR party that swept the PNM out of office, after 30 unbroken years, with a 33-3 margin.

Myers, who suffered from multiple sclerosis and was confined to a wheel chair for several years, was an outspoken political and social commentator, up until his death.

“He will be missed by all of us who treasured his work and his life,” wrote Agriculture Minister, Clarence Rambharat, on his official Facebook page.
