British National Who Wanted To Play Cricket For West Indies Murdered

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Apr. 12, (CMC) – A 22-year-old British national, whose dream was to play cricket for the West Indies, was shot and killed here, over the weekend, police have confirmed.

They said that Adrian St. John, who played for the Chris Gayle Academy in London, died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he had been taken after being shot by bandits on Sunday.

St. John was driving a vehicle with two women, ages 50 and 22, as his passengers, when he stopped the vehicle to allow the older woman to pick up her relative. But two armed men emerged from behind two water tanks and pointed guns at them, robbing them of cell phones and cash. The thieves ordered St. John to drive away and fired a shot at the car as he drove off. He was struck in the back of the head.

Police said a 24-year-old man is assisting their investigations.

Relatives said that St. John had come to Trinidad around Carnival and was making plans to eventually try out for the West Indies team.

Gayle, who is playing cricket in India, tweeted “such sad news to hear. My condolences to his family and friends. Adrian St. John was the captain of the academy”.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said “we are in contact with authorities following the death of a British national in Trinidad and are ready to provide consular assistance”.

In 2014, St. John graduated from Hertfordshire University with a degree in history and philosophy.

Vice Chancellor Quintin McKellar said he had been a “credit to the university”.
