Woman Awarded Millions In Hospital Lawsuit In Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica, December 19, 2016 (CMC) – A woman has been awarded J$4-million (One Jamaica dollar =US$0.008 cents) in compensation in the aftermath of an incident at the University Hospital of the West Indies, 10 years ago.

In March 2006, Barbara Wright was accidentally given a blood transfusion with the wrong blood type. She later sued the hospital, claiming that she suffered both physical and mental injuries.

Wright claimed that she suffered from hypertension and posttraumatic stress disorder, to name a few.

She was supported by medical reports from two psychiatrists, which stated that she needed future therapy in order to cope with the side effects.

While the hospital admitted liability, the institution challenged the amount of money being sought for compensation.

The Supreme Court accepted submissions from both sides and found that Wright did suffer mental and physical injuries.

In handing down the award, the Supreme Court also made provisions for her future medical expenses.

Wright was awarded J$4 million in general damages, J$84 thousand in special damages and J$360,000 for future medical expenses.
