Antigua And Barbuda Rocked By 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, April 18, 2018 (CMC) – An earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.7, rocked several parts of Antigua and Barbuda, yesterday, causing widespread panic, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.

The US-based Geological Survey (USGS) said that the quake, which occurred at 4.26PM, was located five kilometres (km) east-south-east of Parham and 13.4 kilometers east-south-east of the capital.

The quake, which was located 17.078°N   61.726°W and had a depth of 21.6 kilometers, was also felt 85.2 kilometers north of Guadeloupe.

One resident in Antigua told reporters that items on his wall fell to the ground, and another said the quake was the most intense he has felt in many years.

Many people took to Facebook, expressing their fears about the quake, which the Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) said had a magnitude of 4.4.
