CEP Releases Final Results Of October Poll In Haiti

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 12, (CMC) – Nearly seven months after the polls were closed, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has released final results of the municipal elections.

The CEP, on Monday night, released the results for 69 communes, including 58 not having been the subject of any challenge, and 10 others, for which no appeal has been lodged against the deliberations of the Offices of Communal Electoral Litigation (BCEC).

Opposition parties had, in the past, accused electoral officials of overseeing the October 25, 2015 polls that were riddled with inaccuracies and took to the streets demanding fresh elections. They had also refused to accept the results.

The CEP said that the municipal results, subject to appeal, will be published as soon as the BCEC has sat and deliberated.

Meanwhile, members of the newly appointed Prime Minister Enex Jean-Charles government were sworn into office on Monday night, with Maridès Ménager Alexandre becoming the first woman to be appointed Secretary General of the Primature.

Jean-Charles described her as a “fearless worker, a disciplined person and a fighter in the public service” recalling her days as a student in the Faculty of Law and Economic Science of the State University of Haiti.

Under the agreement reached following the departure of president Michel Martelly in February, continuation of the elections process to the second round will take place on April 24. The new president, elected by that process, will be installed on May 14, 2016.
