Guyanese Mother Of Two Jailed On Drug Charges

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, June 21, (CMC) – A 21-year-old mother of two, who pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking in cocaine, was sentenced, today, to four years imprisonment.

In addition, Angelica Forde, who was detained at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport on May 15 with cocaine strapped to her body, was also fined GUY$8.2 million (One Guyana dollar =US$0.004 cents).

She was en route to Barbados for her flight to the United States when she was searched by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) and the drugs found.

Forde appeared composed as Magistrate Bibi Zameena-Ali imposed the sentence on the mother of two children, including a one-year-old, and who had told the court, Monday, that she was “really sorry” about the crime, and insisted “no one else was involved”.

Forde’s husband, James Forde, pleaded not guilty to inciting his wife between May 1, 2016 and June 15, 2016 to traffick in 3.4 kilograms of cocaine and has been remanded into custody until July 25.
