Cricket Tournament A Grand Slam For Scarborough Hospital

Event Raises $50,000 for Hospital’s Cancer Care Program

Scarborough, Ontario – Hundreds of Toronto-area residents filled the fields of L’Amoreaux Park, in Scarborough, on June 22-23, as the Scarborough World Cup of Cricket made its debut with a grand slam.

Ten local teams competed in the inaugural cricket tournament, and while the Scarborough Muslim Association-sponsored team took home first prize, the ultimate winner was The Scarborough Hospital, which raised $50,000 for its Cancer Care Program through the community-wide family event.

Second-place tournament winner was the team sponsored by ATN (Asian Television Network).

“The event exceeded our expectations, and is a testament to the growing popularity of cricket in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA),” said Michael Mazza, President of The Scarborough Hospital Foundation (TSHF), which organized the event. “It also demonstrates that great things can be accomplished when the community comes together.”

The Scarborough World Cup of Cricket – which the TSHF says will become an annual event – included the tournament, as well as cricket clinics, a family barbeque, an international food fair, and Teddy Bear “check-ups” performed by hospital doctors and nurses in field tents. Celebrities on-site included leading professional cricket player Umar Bhatti, popular level-three certified cricket coach, Nadeem Khokhar, veteran cricket commentator, Iftikhar Ahmed, and former Toronto Raptors player, Jamaal Magloire.

In addition to the Scarborough Muslim Association and ATN, other event sponsors were Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank of Canada, Habib Canadian Bank/Pakistan Consulate, The Islamic Foundation of Toronto, Western Union, Arthur Fire Protection, Woburn Medical Dental Centre, Woburn Pharmacy, Scarborough Town Centre, Physiomed, The Valley Park Go Green Cricket Field, Remax Community Realty, and Physio-Fit.

“We thank all of our sponsors and the GTA community for attending the Scarborough World Cup of Cricket and supporting such an important cause for the residents of Scarborough,” said Tournament Chair, Nigel Samaroo.

According to Sari Greenwood, Patient Manager of The Scarborough Hospital Cancer Care program, the funds raised from The Scarborough World Cup of Cricket will help the hospital continue to provide high-quality integrated cancer care services to the community and high quality cancer care close to home for thousands of local residents.

“The Scarborough Hospital receives more than 24,000 visits annually to its cancer centre, and the numbers are growing,” Greenwood said.

“Managed by a multidisciplinary team of oncologists and specially-trained nurses, the hospital’s Cancer Care program is very strong, and with increased integration of services, our program will become even stronger.”
