Live Your Life To The Fullest!

As the XXII Olympic Winter Games draws near and thousands of athletes prepare to travel to Sochi, Russia to compete, I am forced to remember the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Canada won the nail biting cliff-hanger hockey game between the U.S and Canada; and what a game that was! The much anticipated hockey match was watched by billions around the world, especially in all towns and cities across Canada and the U.S., and demonstrated the strength of a nation almost shut out of the finals.

I am certainly no hockey fan, but I myself was glued to the television, screaming at the top of my lungs. The resiliency and dedication of all the athletes as they battled against the unknown, tackling not only the treacherous weather, but also personal tragedies, was inspiring. Skater Joannie Richotte, who lost her mother two days before her competition was to begin, won a bronze medal at the Games. There were so many stories of determination, even when many adversities stared the athletes in their faces.

As women, we are often met with resistance from others which negate our ambitions and often belittle our goals and desires. However, the Olympic Games have shown us that if you believe in yourself, even through difficult situations, anything is possible.

I, like many others, am no stranger to doubt from friends and foes. “Sandy, I don’t think that you can get what you want,” my publicist/mentor said to me recently at my request to be a Presenter at a much talked about and televised event.

“Yes, they might have heard of you a little bit but there are others out there who are more well-known than you are,” he went on to say. “Well with an attitude like that, I will never get to do it,” I sarcastically said to him.

“Just pick up the phone and make the call to the guy who is in charge, I will charm my way in,” I added. Needless to say, I got my wish and it might just be the most lucrative career move that I have made to date.

My belief that, “Only God can tell me no” allows me to stay focused, like an athlete. Yes, of course there are days when I ask myself, “Why don’t I just give up and throw in the towel?” which of course would fulfill my mother’s dreams. “Geez, I might as well,” I think sometimes to myself. However, at the end of the day, I know that I would not be living the life that I was meant to live. We are all here for a purpose I believe, and each and every one has to live according to what is in their heart.

With the 2010 Olympics behind us and a new one just around the corner, the determination and resilience that all athletes display during each Games, should serve as a reminder of our abilities as human beings, and powerful women. It should also remind us of our lack luster love lives with our mates. Adapt the mentality of an athlete and go for Gold, even in the bedroom.

Every encounter should be as if you have reached the podium at the Olympics, with you shouting, “Yes, Yes, and Yes! I have reached the mountain top” similar to that of Meg Ryan’s character in the restaurant scene in the movie, “When Harry met Sally”. I want what she is having!

Yes, setting the bar higher for ourselves will undoubtedly make us realize that we are capable of unthinkable accomplishments; but first you must believe. Jesse Owens once said, “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”
