WASHINGTON, DC, CMC – The Secretary General of the Organization of Americas States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, has sent a letter of condolence to President Donald Ramotar, on the passing of the former Minister of Agriculture, Navin Chandarpal.

“The late Dr. Chandarpal made a significant contribution to the public service in Guyana over the last 22 plus years and will be particularly remembered for his efforts in helping to steer the country on a path toward sustainable development and the adoption of sound environmental practices,” Insulza said.

He said Chandarpal was an “advocate for regional agricultural policies in the deliberations of our sister agency, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.”

“We at the OAS recall Dr. Chandarpal´s support for and contributions to the work undertaken by the organization in implementing such regional projects as ‘Caribbean: Adaptation to Global Climate Change,’ which paved the way for the creation of the Caribbean Climate Center, now located in Belize.”

He said Chandarpal was also instrumental in furthering “Guyana’s gift to the international community for the study of climate change and the environment, the Iwokrama Rain Forest Project.”
