GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Inter Religious Organisation (IRO) is calling on the political parties contesting the May 11 national and regional elections in Guyana to sign a peace pact.
A statement issued by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said that the request was made during a meeting between the IRO and the body in charge of conducting the election.
“Signing a Peace Pact is one critical action the IRO indicated it would like all political parties contesting the General and Regional Elections on May, 11, 2015 to be a part of,” the statement said, noting that in addition to the peace pact, the IRO also indicated a willingness to be involved in Civic and Voter Education ahead of the polls.
The election will be contested by the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) that is seeking to extend its 22 year grip on power and the coalition alliance comprising A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC).
In the last Parliament, the coalition controlled a one-seat majority in the 65-member legislative chamber.
April 7 is nomination day for the elections and the ruling party has already named the incumbent head of state Donald Ramotar as its president nominee. He will be challenged by retired Brigadier David Granger on behalf of the coalition alliance.
