10 Year-old Killed By Shotgun In Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is calling on the authorities to implement the “significant penalties” under the Children’s Act after a 10-year-old boy was shot and killed by an 11-year-old with a shotgun in a garden in Diego Martin, west of here on Thursday.

The Authority said that the law provides for significant penalties “for a person who fails to take reasonable precautions to guard against a child having access to arms and ammunition”.

Police said that Reuben Reed was in the company of some friends when they stumbled upon the gun, and was shot in the chest by an 11-year-old boy.  Another boy was grazed by a bullet.

The Authority said it is on standby to provide support to the children who were involved in the incident, and was appealing “to parents and guardians to supervise their children, and be extremely vigilant in ensuring the safety of their children, especially during the school holiday”.

Police said they had also found a small number of marijuana plants in the area.
