ECTEL Hosts Workshop On Consumer Participation In ICT

CASTRIES, St Lucia CMC – A two-day workshop, aimed at strengthening consumer participation in the development and benefits of information, communication and technology (ICT) regulatory frameworks, begins here today.

The event is being organised by the St. Lucia-based Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) and will allow participants to also get a better understanding of telecoms and data consumer regulatory provisions, as well as discuss mechanisms and tools for consumer awareness.

It will also provide information on the new Electronic Communications Bill and the draft CARICOM consumer protection legislation, both of which provide new regulations for consumer protection in the ICT sector.

“In the review and reorganization of regulatory frameworks for the electronic communications sector, greater emphasis is being placed on the capacities, rights, powers and responsibilities of consumers, in order that they fully benefit from the advances in the sector,” said ECTEL Managing Director, Embert Charles.

“The workshop will provide critical information and also set the basis for building sustainable local and global consumer networks,” he added.
