ROSEAU, Dominica, May 17, (CMC) — Public workers returned to their jobs, today, after police removed a ‘suspicious’ package that had been placed at a gate, near the government headquarters in the capital.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Superintendent Davidson Valerie, told reporters that a report had been made about a “suspicious package” at the building, which is stone throw from the office of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

“In response to the report, the CID officers and the Crime Scene officers proceeded and found the suspicious device which was investigated. The item was removed by the trained bomb officers…where further investigation was done.

“It was found to be made up of sand and stones. The item was investigated and some samples were kept…for further investigation,” Valarie said, adding “that it appears whoever was involved attempted to create some scare.

“There was no explosive device found in the items that were examined; from our initial investigations it doesn’t appear to be able to do any damage or injury to anyone,” he said, adding that the police would continue their probe.

“We will pursue it, we will be interviewing various persons and go around the city to see how we can get further assistance in determining what transpired,” he added.

The senior police officer said he wanted to assure the public that there is no need for panic and work could resume in the area.

Police had diverted traffic from the area and also evacuated workers from the nearby Treasury Department.
