Jamaica’s 60th Independence Celebrations “Soon Come” To Ontario

TORONTO, Ontario (Friday July 29, 2022) — Jamaican-Canadian communities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Hamilton and Niagara, will host a series of events, to mark Jamaica’s 60th Anniversary of Independence, starting July 31 and culminating on October 2022.

This is a significant milestone in the history of Jamaica and therefore presents an opportunity for the Jamaican-Canadian community to pause and reflect on our accomplishments as a people and the impact on the global stage, remarked Lincoln Downer, Consul General and co-Chair of the Jamaica 60 Toronto Planning Committee.

“I am delighted to join with Jamaican-Canadians and friends to commemorate our Diamond Jubilee. It presents an opportunity to showcase our rich and diverse culture and the impact of Jamaica on the world stage,” he added in a media release, on Tuesday.

Several signature events and initiatives will take place throughout the region:

  • Jamaica 60 Flag Raising Ceremonies in Toronto, Oshawa, Mississauga, London, Brampton, Markham and Hamilton.
  • Jamaica 60 Independence Church Services.
  • Special Illumination of Niagara Falls in celebration of Jamaica 60th Anniversary of Independence.
  • Diamond Jubilee Cricket Match: Jamaica XI vs Trinidad & Tobago XI.
  • Taste of Jamaica.
  • Release of the Jamaica 60 Toronto Game Changers Digital Magazine.

In addition to these signature events, there will be many other endorsed events throughout the GTA and Hamilton — listed on the official website: www.jamaica60to.com — that reflect the diversity of the Jamaican-Canadian community.

“Once again, the Jamaican-Canadian community has come together to ensure the rich history, legacy and impact of Jamaicans are shared with all Canadians, stated Planning Committee co-Chair, Adaoma Patterson.

“I am proud to co-chair this year’s Jamaica 60 Independence committee, and work with many passionate and committed organizations to host and profile activities for all ages.”

During the Jubilee year, we look forward to celebrating, highlighting, and sharing the rich culture, traditions, and accomplishments of Jamaicans in Canada and abroad, Downer and Patterson concluded in a joint statement.

The events will be held under the auspices of the Consulate-General of Jamaica at Toronto, representatives of the Jamaican-Canadian Associations, Jamaica Tourist Board, JAMPRO and major sponsors: Grace Foods Canada, Victoria Mutual Group and Jamaica National Group, Caribbean Airlines and West Jet.
