Letter’s Author Appears Not To Understand The Roots/Underpinnings/Origins Of Caribana

Re: Roger Gibbs’s letter in Pride News Magazine on May 14, 2021 (The Toronto Caribbean Carnival: Outdated Arts Development Approach? – Pride News)

Editor:
Thanks for sharing an ex-FMC (Festival Management Committee) board member’s perspective. The author appears not to understand the roots/underpinnings/origins of the festival — hence its longevity — and seems to repeat his experience, when he sat on the FMC board for a number of years.

Notice he does not blame the FMC for the state the festival is currently in. Go figure his motivation to write such an article at this time, without “fact checking”, and witness the serious omission of how the festival’s design model was built around the carnival arts.

I will deal with this type of awkward thinking in my, soon-to-be-published book, entitled “The Rise And Fall Of Caribana — As A Community Festival”.
